Art Deco and eye examinations? Since when was there a connection?

with curly sides from the 1930’s? Hell, NO! Melding Art deco with eyecare was an idea that sprang forth when thinking about how to restore the interior of our new premises in 1997. (See, “History Page”).

involved in re-locating any business is not something any sane person wishes to repeat more than once. The concept of having to re-invent the interior in the future, as fashion trends changed, did not exactly ring our bells either.

why not go back in history and re-create an era that was classic? That way the décor would never be judged to be “dated”. It was just a matter of selecting the right period - an age that was olde worlde, but not old fashioned.

and we’ve been hooked ever since. We hunted out Art Deco items from around New Zealand and juxtaposed them next to spectacle frame displays, hoping that the general public could cope with such a novel idea. It was rather a risk, really. How did we cope with the thought of criticism or ridicule on opening day?

you can’t please all the people all the time, and the idea that you don’t want to regret what you never had the courage to do. It had become a passion, this desire to combine enjoyment of historic beauty with enjoyment of modern frame design.

with great books on Art Deco design that begged to be taken home for the weekend and pored over into the wee small hours.

Trudy McLean, came to live and breathe Art Deco so that it poured out on paper with new designs for the furniture we were unable to source in local antique shops.
